ELEKTRA
Chorus and Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera (23 February 1952)
Varnay, Höngen, Schöffler, Wegner, Svanholm / Reiner
Opera lovers have long hoped to hear a complete performance of Elektra
conducted by Fritz Reiner after hearing the RCA release of excerpts with Inge
Borkh. Now, at last, the Met broadcast with Astrid Varnay's memorable singing of
the title role, electrifyingly conducted by Reiner, can be heard in this goodsounding
release. All the expected Guild production values are included: extensive
booklet notes on the work and the performance, biographies of the singers and an
extensive track-related synopsis. Varnay and Reiner join to deliver a stunning
experience. The album also includes Varnay and Reiner in scenes
from Der Rosenkavalier, 1953.
